What Is the Movie First Man About
With a library of at least a thousand movies, I am a certified movie geek!
What Was That Movie Called?
"What's that movie with that guy that did that thing with that one girl? Oh, and it was set in high school back in the 80s?"
Have you ever asked someone a similar question? Well, instead of languishing in agony, there are many different steps you can take to help you figure out what that movie is. I have outlined a few here in this article.
I have found that these steps are the most helpful:
- Think about the plot of the movie: What happens and what do the characters do? Is there anything important that sticks out in your mind? Something that separates the movie from others and makes it unique.
- Think about the setting: What period was the movie in? What cultural allusions did the film make? Did the movie reference any historical moment or any other film of note?
- Think about the music: Was any popular song used in the movie? It's very straightforward to look up things like that online, so even if it's only one song, you still have something to search with.
- Think about the actors: Who was in the movie? Anyone whose name you can remember? Perhaps you can only remember a character's name, that's still a big clue that can aid in your search.
How to Search Google When You Don't Know the Name of the Movie?
Sometimes all you need to find the movie is a well-formulated search query on Google. Try to type in keywords and concepts unique to the movie. The great thing about the internet now is that there are so many writers out there compiling movie lists that it makes it much easier to find obscure movies that you have forgotten the title of.
I recently watched the movie Waking Life, a film about lucid dreaming, so I tried searching for it on Google without entering the title, and I was pleased with how quickly I was able to find it.
What Was the Name of That Movie?
If you have not had any luck using Google, there are other ways to search the internet to find what you are looking for.
There is a new site called What Is My Movie? which uses an AI algorithm to give you similar movies just by typing in a search phrase. The AI is the most accurate when searching for a title as it will tend to bring up movies with the search terms in their titles. Keep that in mind when using the search program as you can get some wonky results if you do not search using the correct keywords. It will take some trial and error to figure out the right search terms, but after that, the AI works quite well.
Tips for Your Movie Search
If you decide to search other places online for your movie, IMDb.com is a great database to use. There are lots of ways to search on this site: by title, actor, plot, or keywords. The latter two are the best if you have that pesky unknown movie in your head. It may take some time and patience, but you will find the movie most of the time.
Also, click on the search engine's "Search Tools" or "Advanced Search" button. There you can use filters to narrow down your search. The site is also great for finding technical information on the entire crew of any given movie. So even remembering the name of a minor actor that does not have a Wikipedia page can help you find the movie on IMDb.
Famous Songs Used in Movies
If you can figure out a certain song from the film, Wikipedia or allmusic.com can be useful sources for finding out what movies have used the piece. For most famous songs Wikipedia contains a wealth of information about when the song was used in other media. AllMusic is good for finding technical information such as the soundtrack that a certain song has appeared on, which can help you immensely. Even a song that may not be popular enough to have a Wikipedia page will most likely have a page on AllMusic listing the albums it has appeared on.
Ask a Question
If you are still having trouble figuring out the name of the movie, then please ask in the comment capsule below!
Some Friendly Requests
- Be nice!
- Scroll through other people's questions. If you know the answer, post it. Make sure you specify the name of the questioner to eliminate confusion.
- Finally, (I'm starting to develop a pet peeve about this one), when posting a question, if you know how old the movie is, please add that bit of information.

I'm trying to find the name of a movie that I watched on a plane sometime between 2014-2018. Movie is set in a current era.
The movie is a sort of "coming of age" movie about a boy who sneaks out of the house with the girl across the street. She goes out and has revenge on others which were not nice to her, including a scene where she sneaks into someone's house and puts nair on his eyebrows, and then spray paints their car. The guy wakes up and chases them out of the house but can't drive after them.
They boy and the girl end up at a building and there's a scene where they dance overlooking a city. The next day he goes to see her but she is gone. The boy convinces the girls sibling and they is able to look in her room for her and finds a clue lodged in the door hinge - which is on a piece of paper.
He and his friends leave school and go looking for her. They go to an abandoned building to find a clue and look at a map that is on the wall. That map gives another clue and they end up skipping school and driving to the location on the map and find a farm. They search for her but can't find her. The other kids need to go home and the boy won't leave. He stays looking for her. He finds her near a train station and she tells him to stop trying to find her.

Hi, looking for and old (at least 20 years, probably more) movie about a mediocre and even venal man who rose to the heights of post-World War II French society by out-and-out lying about everything -- stating, for example, that he was a member of the Resistance when in reality he was a bystander if not a collaborator. The protagonist achieves overwhelming social and professional success before confessing that everything was a fabrication -- a fabrication made possible by the inside-out nature of French society in the post-War years and the willful suspension of belief by the most influential people in France because they were deeply ashamed of their conduct and wanted to believe a decent-looking man with an inspiring (if utterly false) story. Thanks, John

Looking for a horror movie from 70s ir 80s. I watched some if it as a young kid with parents in mid or late 80s. Girl was lost or hiking and met someone at a house (think it was a cabin). Or she found the cabin herself. Found a bed and slept. Her hand and fingers dangled off the edge off the bed.. She woke up to find fingers were cut off or bitten off, can't remember. She was scrwaming. I was terrified and ran away from TV. I would like to see this movie again for closure but cant find this movie anywhere.

I'm trying to find a film I once saw on TV. It seemed to be set in the 60s and featured a geeky hippyish couple. He wore glasses and played the guitar. She was blonde and may have worn glasses too. There was a scene where they were having sex while she was on the phone. But it's romantic rather than gratuitous. There's also a scene where he knocks on her door and when she asks who's there he says sarcastically 'Bob Dylan'. If anyone can tell me the title, I'd be very grateful.

The setting was when electric just was new. Perhaps England.
Deaf parents and two childrens, one boy and a girl (perhaps). The boy fell from the balcony and died, leaving the deaf parents in agony. They didn't hear anything.
Mom was also arguing with the daughter about the use of the only electric plug in the light socket. Mom need it for ironing and daughter wanted to listen to the radio.

Hi, maybe it's The Woman in Red, 1984 starring Gene Wilder and Kelly LeBrock.

I noticed that the screenplay credits went to Yves Robert and Jean-Loup Dabadie ... (screenplay "Un Elephant Ca Trompe Enormement"), so perhaps it is a variant or adaptation of this movie as a foreign film.
I remember a British art film with similar plot based in London in the swinging 60s (saw it on a school trip to Cambridge), have no idea what it was called and not seen it since :-((
Good luck

This is driving me crazy: I have this image of a character in a movie...
I believe this movie is from the '90s and it's probably a fantasy, kid-friendly movie. The character in question is a doctor. A man. Dark blond straight hair, a bit long, to the ears, rectangular glasses, pointy nose, very clear blue eyes, a dimple on his chin. He's a good man at the beginning of the film, but then he goes a bit bad for SOME reason...
It is reminiscent of those kids-friendly '90s films, he's similar to the dad scientist in Casper or Robin Williams in Flubber, but it's not THEM...!

It was a tv series, with a old lady sitting in a big chair on the attic/top floor. The curtains stayed closed. As she was old, very very old, maybe she was a vampire.
At the end of the series a young girl or boy opened the curtains and she likely burned to dust.
I watched this as kid and can't remember what series it was.
1980-1990ish.

I believe this is a foreign film. It's about a young blonde girl somewhere between the age of 15 and 17, it takes care of her grandmother upstairs in a second Story House Farmhouse. I believe the grandmother factually dies at one point. And I think the girl has imaginary creature show up like maybe unicorn or something and possibly a military guy comes in hide their bar. Is anybody ever heard of this film and just give me the name of it?
At the end of the film, the young girl is shown topless.

Hello. I am looking for a movie but I cant remember many details. Everything that I can reveal is that a middle age woman, who was in a vacation, meets a younger man, charming, who flirts with her, she likes him, falls for him and have a romantic night at the hotel. But when she wakes up, she has a shock when another man is in the room and it turns out that the one she slept with was a gigolo, using rich woman for their money. The lady starts to cry, the business partner of the gigolo shouts at her and asks her to pay for the services she got from the younger man. She returns to her country and, the last scene, shows her walking on a rail way train (if i remember good), when suddenly she sees the man, at a distance, looking at her. 70's movie for sure. Lots of neon and hilarious costumes. I was always curious as to what it was. It was super cheesy, looked like a strange disco tron- like, gladiator movie.

I feel like they were walking around an area that was really deserted and it was night, maybe a cliff area overlooking the city? But they basically get attacked by this guy. Assassin thriller late 70's I believe (might be earlier or later really can't say). Antagonist has a rifle that fires bolts that break his targets necks. I recall the scene where the gunsmith shows him how to use it. He stands next to the target and points at the dolls neck. The assassin then fires and breaks the gunsmiths neck. I also recall a scene where the assassin kills someone at a ski resort with the rifle and the protagonist finds the "bullet". Haven't seen the movie in over 25 years, so I that's all I can recall.

If you haven't seen it, I don't want to say anything about it, because I wouldn't want to spoil it. It isn't the kind of thing where you can just watch the scene on youtube (watching it that way would just ruin it). You really need to know the characters and understand what leads up to that moment.

@Baff
i luv Joseph Cotten in Hitch's, Shadow of a Doubt - he said he was lucky to be in 3 of the gr8est films of all time - his opinion.
Re: "The Third Man"
Joseph Cotten as Holly Martins
Alida Valli (credited as Valli) as Anna Schmidt - my grans name, lol
Orson Welles lists Citizen Kane (1941) as his best film, Alfred Hitchcock opts for Shadow of a Doubt (1943) and Sir Carol Reed chose The Third Man (1949) - and I'm in all of them.
He has appeared in five films that have been selected for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant: Citizen Kane (1941), The Magnificent Ambersons (1942), Shadow of a Doubt (1943), Gaslight (1944) and Touch of Evil (1958).

@baff - seen and like these
The Third Man (1949)
Giant (1956)
A Place in the Sun (1951)
The Last Picture Show (1971)
Baff on May 23, 2020:
God..Crazy 2 was "ok", but certainly not as good as the first. My expectations were high, so it was a let down. If you keep your expectations modest, you may well enjoy it.
For the last year or so, I have been working through the AFI 100 & AFI 100 10-year Anniversary lists. Some I have skipped because they were already on my favorites list. Some I haven't seen in decades, so I rewatched them. Between the 2 lists I still have about 30 movies to watch. Of those 30, these are the ones I haven't seen before (or forgotten that I have seen):
On The Waterfront (1954)
The Birth of a Nation (1915)
The Third Man (1949)
Giant (1956)
A Place in the Sun (1951)
Sunrise (1927)
The Last Picture Show (1971)
Sullivan's Travels (1941)
Nashville (1975)
Many of the movies that made it onto these lists are well made, but not really my cup of tea. I tend to prefer "fun" movies. Even for dramas and tragedies, I need to at least enjoy the ride.
So far the only AFI movie I hadn't seen before that I added to my favorites list was "In the Heat of the Night". Heavy drama, but still fun to watch.
On a side note, I think the hardest to find movie on my list was "They Might be Giants" (1971). Though it came out on blu-ray last year, so much easier to find now.

GAS666, Were you able to find a copy of The Big Chance (1957) online? I have got this one on my Watch List now. Sounds interesting.
Game show - yikes! I would be a little worried about making a fool of myself. Did you win anything?
RE your noir dark list - are there any you find a little too dark?
I find Peeping Tom and Phantom of the Paradise are great movies but they are just a little too creepy (and yet for some reason I can watch 10 Rillington Place for some reason) The 'eight more days to Hallowe'en' in Hallowe'en III is a bit spooky for such a terrible movie.
galacticgirrrl on May 23, 2020:
I love movies lists and movie memory sites like this - quite neat Baff.
Animal House - of course. And the In Laws is so good that even the remake works.
I picked up a copy of The Gods Must Be Crazy 2 but I can't bring myself to watch it. Very few sequels work.
Now I have 4 more added to my Watch List. I have never even heard of any of these:
Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont
1776
A Big Hand for the Little Lady
One, Two, Three
Living in LA is my dream. I loved it from the first visit.
A bad speeding ticket and now I go to Hawaii for vacations.
Great Erin Brockovich tidbit. I will have to watch it again now and look for it.
What movies are hunting for to see again or for first time?
Jason on May 23, 2020:
Guy (Reality TV exec) takes his date back to his appartment. After sex or in the morning tells her he only sleeps with anyone once and she leaves. She has short black hair, is a pretty woman.
She returns and breaks into his appartment or house, ties him to a chair. She teases him for some time while holding him at knife point.
I think he was setup on the date as a joke by his work friends, she was once rejected for the show he works on though and wanted revenge.
The film ends with the guy escaping but being chased and stabbed by the obsessed fan.
I think this movie was on Netflix but cannot find it. Most of the movie is in the appartment.

From what I can remember it was an 80's teen flick movie, where a boy falls in love with a girl and sneak in her bedroom because her father was so strict. When the girl woke up she was surprise to find the boy beside her in her bed so on and so forth with their love story. The girl was blond and the boy looks like a dancer with his baggy pants and weird outfit. At first I thought he was a scatter boy but I'm not sure. The thing that really strike up my memory was the ending were the boy was dancing with a hip hop bit that was so familiar but I don't know the title. I've watched that movie in Cinemax .

As for 6 degrees...
Grew up in Los Angeles, so often saw them filming one thing or other. I was never a paid extra, but it is certainly possible that I am in the background of some movies without knowing it.
My grandfather was in Erin Brockovich and they filmed in his house. Erin was having him sign the petition (or whatever).

oh yes, i forget so many, kept adding - started at 10, now 80 - like ur list.

CREATING THAT LIST WAS IMPOSSIBLE
I zipped through the 2,654 titles on my old broken down iCollect Movies App.I had 10 faves before I left the letter A.
And these are just the movies I have bought, not to mention those online, in theatre, @library...
Or the ones that have haunted me since seeing them but I can't get my hands on a copy...
How about a Six Degress of List?
Can you connect yourself to any movies, locations, actors....
Just off the top of my head I have:
Black Christmas (police station location is down the road)
My Big Fat Greek Wedding (the house they used is a few blocks away)
Finian's Rainbow (alleged family member in it)
Last Night (went to school with Don McKeller)
The Handmaid's Tale (Margaret Atwood was a client)
Detroit Rock City (I was an extra)
Meatballs (filmed at Camp White Pine near my cottage, school chums were extras)
